Hounds win a penalty shoot out! by Harvo, 20th Oct 2014
The Firsts progress into the next round of the Norman Hardy cup after being slightly less bad at penalties than the opposition…
This is the first match report I’ve done this season and in truth, this game really isn’t deserving of one but for a bit of drama at the end.
The Firsts arrived before the game in excellent form, on the back of five successive victories. After a bright opening where we managed to get the ball down and play some decent stuff, creating a couple of half chances in the process, that proved to be about as good as it got. The quality of football rapidly declined and the game just drifted along to nowhere in particular.
A rare moment of quality in the First half led to us opening the scoring. Rob Bell worked a bit of space for himself on the left and swung in an excellent cross. Matt Little allegedly got a touch on the ball to divert it in but I’m sceptical about how much contact was actually made. 1-0 at HT.
We carried on in the second half, pretty much where we’d left off in the first half, with some pretty sloppy football. Ashley eventually found themselves level with about 10 minutes of the game remaining and it was fully deserved with the endevaour they’d put in. An underhit backpass got somewhat stuck in the long grass before reaching Mike and after a bit of a squirmish, ended up in the back of our net. We almost nicked a late winner in the last minute, with Trevor being very unfortunate to see his shot well saved by the keeper. Anyway, it finished 1-1 at FT and was straight to penalties.
This was the first shoot out I’d been involved in with the Hounds (from memory anyway) and I can’t say my confidence was particularly high after the manner in which we’d played and knowing that as a club, we don’t have a particularly good record! Anyway, Little, Harvo and Tyron managed to put away their spot kicks and Mike proved to be a giant in goal, saving 3 penalties, winning us the shoot-out 3-2 and him the MOM award.
A much improved performance will be required in the next round if we want to progress any further!
